What is a heat pump?

These work by reversing the refrigeration cycle that you see in air conditioning to provide heat instead of cooling the area. They can extract the heat from both water and air and convert it into a useable heat source that can service a building.

It is not easy to understand how a heat pump can extract heat energy, even in temperatures far below zero, and bring it inside the building to make a noticeable difference. A good example is to imagine the fridge that you have in your kitchen – the grilles in the back get very warm from the heat that is extracted from inside of the fridge.

How does a heat pump work?

Heat pumps work by transferring thermal energy – they extract heat from the outside air into refrigerant, which is then compressed (raising the temperature significantly).  The refrigerant then passes to the indoor unit of the heat pump where air passes across this hot refrigerant and heats the indoor air space.

What type of heat pumps does TEK offer?

At TEK, we offer Air to Water and Air to Air heat pumps. If you have any additional questions, please feel free to get in touch by filling in our contact form or you can call us on 0117 952 33 55.

What is an air source heat pump?

Air source heat pumps are an alternative method to heat your premises that can give more energy-efficient results than more traditional methods. If you have any additional questions, please feel free to get in touch by filling in our contact form or you can call us on 0117 952 33 55.

How does an air source heat pump work?

They take energy from the air outside and convert it in to heat for your premises. There are different types of air source heat pumps available – air to air heat pumps which you more typically find heating the air in commercial or industrial spaces, or air to water heat pumps which are more typical in residential settings, where the heat pump is used to provide hot water and radiator or under floor heating. If you have any additional questions, please feel free to get in touch by filling in our contact form or you can call us on 0117 952 33 55.

How regularly should my heat pump be serviced?

What is an air handling unit?

How does an air handling unit work?

Air handling units work by taking ambient fresh air from outside, and then cleaning and heating or cooling it, sometimes humidifying it, and then distributing that around a building. They often have another fan which pulls used, dirty air out of the premises before resupplying it with clean air. If you have any additional questions regarding Air handling units, please feel free to get in touch by filling in our contact form or you can call us on 0117 952 33 55.

What is a combined heating and air con unit?

Having a combined unit that handles both your heating and cooling needs work by having a single-coil, compressor, fan, and filter in one single unit allowing it to combine both cooling and heating capacity.

What are the benefits of using air conditioning system for heating as well as cooling?

Using your air conditioning system to supply you with heat has many benefits over and above traditional central heating systems, but being incredibly efficient is the most important one.

Should I swap to a combined unit?

Most split types of heat pumps are heating and cooling, however specific units for example server rooms are cooling only with electric heaters.  So the choice of type of heat pump will also need to be driven by the space and usage of the room.  This will be discussed in detail as part of our proposals to you.  Please contact our sales team by filling in our contact form or calling us on 0117 952 33 55 to discuss your specific requirements and find out the options that are available to you.

Can I save money by heating with Air conditioning?

Yes – Obviously it depends on the amount you use it but modern Air conditioning systems are more economical than other heating systems like Central heating.
