10 types of commercial air conditioning

types of commercial air conditioining

When it comes to commercial air conditioning, there is not one-size-fits-all solution.  There are numerous types of systems on the market, including:

  1. Basic split systems

A split system uses refrigerant as the heat exchange fluid and has an evaporator, compressor, and condenser as separate components. These types of systems can be designed from scratch to fully suit the individuals requirements of every commercial property.

  1. Quad systems

This system allows four indoor air conditioning units to be served by one outdoor one.  They are well suited to open plan offices and provide a constant and comfortable temperature, as well as helping to reduce utility costs and carbon footprint.

  1. VRV Heat Reclaim

VRV is a type of HVAC that uses refrigerant as the cooling and heating medium. It will constantly adjust the amount of refrigerant being sent to each evaporator and take advantage of existing heat or cool air in the building. These types of system are an extremely energy efficient means of precisely regulating the temperature within commercial buildings.

  1. R22 replacement

R22 Replacement with a system using newer refrigerants such as R32 needs to be considered if your equipment is still operating on the now banned R22 refrigerant. While it remains legal to operate an air conditioning system that uses R22, it’s now illegal to replenish the refrigerant in your system when carrying out repairs and maintenance. This makes R22 Replacement a necessity for anyone with an older style air conditioning system.

  1. Central Plant

In the central air conditioning systems, there will be a plant room where large compressor, condenser, thermostatic expansion valve and the evaporator are kept that control the entire commercial air conditioning system.  These offer an effective way to regulate the temperature in large commercial premises.

  1. Air Handling Units

An air handling unit regulates and circulates air as part of an HVAC system. They are designed to discharge and admit air directly to and from a space that doesn’t have ductwork.  These systems can improve the quality of the indoor air and may help to increase the energy efficiency of the HVAC system.

  1. Gas Driven GHP – VRF Systems

Variable refrigerant flow (VRF) air-conditioning system provides a very flexible way to provide highly efficient gas powered heating and cooling for commercial buildings. They are also incredibly cost effective for larger areas.

  1. Heat recovery wheels and exchangers

Heat recovery wheels are perforated spinning wheels or discs that allow the transfer of heat between two adjacent flows of air. They are often the backbone of heat recovery ventilators.  In the winter months heat recovery ventilators allow the heat from any air to be removed, while in the summer months, the air being expelled is used to cool the hot incoming air. These types of system are incredibly energy efficient.

  1. Chillers for fan coils and process applications (FCU)

The chillers evaporator is a heat exchanger that transfers heat from a process or air conditioning water circuit to the chillers cooler liquid refrigerant.  These types of systems are an excellent delivery mechanism for hydronic chiller boiler systems in both large residential and light commercial applications.

  1. Evaporative cooling systems

An evaporative cooler is a device that cools air through the evaporation of water. Evaporative cooling differs from typical air conditioning systems, which use vapor-compression or absorption refrigeration cycles. In dry climates, evaporative cooling of air has the added benefit of conditioning the air with more moisture for the comfort of building occupants.
