What Bristol’s Green Capital Status Means for your Business

Bristol has now begun its year as the European Green Capital for 2015. The first UK city to be given the award, Bristol is being recognised for its efforts to become more environmentally friendly. This is a fantastic boost for the city’s green aspirations and a welcome encouragement for local businesses to do more to reduce their carbon footprint.

The impact of commercial buildings

Non-residential buildings currently account for around 17% of the UK’s carbon emissions. The government’s carbon plan requires all new non-domestic buildings to be zero carbon from 2019, meaning anyone planning a new build has to carefully consider the environmental impact of every aspect of their design.

For some businesses this may be relatively easy, simply requiring them to plan adequate insulation and think about including green energy technology, such as photovoltaic panels. However, for businesses that rely on creating zones of carefully controlled temperatures, finding ways to do so without generating excess carbon may be tough.

Controlling temperature and your carbon footprint

When very precise temperature levels need to be achieved and maintained, such as in close control rooms, the key is to use the right sort of energy efficient technology. This allows you to achieve the results you need while minimising the power required and therefore reducing your carbon footprint.

There are a range of different approaches to help achieve this, with the most effective approach being to use a combination of different eco-friendly systems. To achieve the best results, your entire system should be designed with energy efficiency as its core. Super-efficient technology such as variable refrigerant flow (VRF) systems can very precisely control the amount of refrigerant used in your system, dramatically reducing energy wastage. Inverters serve a similar function, by continuously testing the air temperature and making minor adjustments to achieve a stable temperature, avoid big fluctuations which are bad for your processes and require more energy to correct.

Meanwhile, heat recovery systems allow you to collect unwanted heat from one area and reuse it elsewhere for space and water heating. This reduces the amount of heat you need to generate, cutting your systems energy consumption and thus reducing the amount of carbon dioxide given off second-hand by power generation.
