There are a few different reasons why your air conditioner may freeze, below are the 5 most common reasons that causing freezing.


1. The Coil inside your air conditioner

This comes down to the way the air conditioner functions, the evaporator coil requires that the air inside the unit flow through so that the heat exchange can take place. If there is a blockage and the air cannot flow freely inside the air conditioner, then the Freon will not be able to remove enough heat and over time your air conditioner may even freeze as a result.

2. A Dirty Air Filter

A dirty air filter is the number one culprit that causes low airflow. Low airflow, of course, delivers less air to the evaporator coil for cooling, which as mentioned earlier less air will result in the air conditioner freezing. One of the most overlooked looked ways to clean an air filter is by using ordinary soap and water, save yourself money and don’t waste in on more expensive alternatives.

3. Outside Temperature

Outside temperature may cause refrigerant lines to freeze. Typically, air conditioners are not designed to operate at temperatures below 15 degrees Celsius. However, this varies between brands. If the outside temperature is too low, the temperature/pressure ratio may be affected. This drop in temperature can also cause the refrigeration system temperature to drop, resulting in the evaporator coil freezing. You can, however, try to place the air conditioner in the cooling setting and this will start to remove the ice slowly.

4. Low Refrigerant (Freon)

Freezing can also occur due to low Freon levels. This can happen when there is lower pressure from inside the system itself. When Freon levels are low, but still being forced to expand the same amount, the greater expansion results in a cooler temperature. As your air conditioner’s evaporator coil drops below freezing, the moisture in the air will freeze as it comes into contact with your coil causing it to freeze.

5. Potential Mechanical Failures

In order to avoid any possible mechanical failures, it is important to check that their lines have no bends in them, so the flow of refrigerant is uninterrupted. It is important also to check the fan to make sure it is working effectively and moving air freely as this can also cause your air conditioner to freeze.
