Can you service an air conditioning unit yourself?

A professional air-conditioning service is always the best option when it comes to maintaining an effective system. However, there are ways to improve the condition of your air conditioning unit yourself. Following the steps below could help to keep your unit working as efficiently as possible, until it’s time to get it serviced by the professionals – however it is important to check whether your unit is still within its manufacturer’s warranty period, as servicing by an unauthorised/qualified contractor can invalidate this warranty.

•Clean the condenser fan and oil the fan motor. If you haven’t done this for a while (or ever), your condenser fan is likely to be covered in dust. Clean it thoroughly with a dry brush. Then remove the cover grill and detach the screw that holds the fan in place. Oil the fan motor with the oil type specified in your handbook.

•Clean the condenser coils and fins using a garden hose, removing the coil guard so you can spray inside the unit. This will prevent water-soaked debris accumulating inside the fins. If the fins are bent, you can straighten them out with a fin comb, which will also be a useful tool for cleaning your fins.

Filters need cleaning regularly. You’ll need to remove the casing and then clean it with a cloth, non-abrasive soap and water. Repeat this procedure regularly to enhance the lifespan of your filter, making sure it is completely dry before you reattach it.

•If your filter isn’t functioning at all, you’ll need to get it changed. Failure to keep your filter in good working condition could lead to the build-up of bacteria and fungi, which may be harmful to those breathing in the air from your unit.

•Service the ducts. It is important that you regularly clean your air ducts with a vacuum cleaner to prevent dust and debris getting sucked inside the ducts.

•Regularly check fuses, breakers and the thermostat to ensure they are working effectively and efficiently.

Regular maintenance schedule

Putting an air conditioning maintenance schedule in place is essential to keep your unit working as efficiently as possible and could offer you an extended warranty: up to seven years in some cases. Prevention is always better than cure, so stay ahead of the game by allowing a qualified team to ensure that your unit functions well at all times.
